Fujifilm has yet another camera up for release and this time its for the advance amateur photographers who want an affordable, step-up digital camera. The SLR-styled FinePix S700 is a seven-MegaPixel, long zoom camera.

The Prosumer S700 boasts of an impressive 10x optical zoom and includes a 2.5" LCD plus electronic viewfinder (EVF) and ISO levels of up to ISO 1600 at full resolution. Its compact enough to be carried anywhere and simple enough for advance photography. The camera has been equipped with a Picture Stabilization mode which is known to combat camera shake and image blur as it automatically choose the correct light sensitivity and optimal shutter speed.

BenQ - DC C1000 review

BenQ has its finger in a lot of pies, and one of them is digital cameras. It has recently stepped up the ladder in the Great Hunt For Megapixels, coming up with the DC C1000 which churns out ten of them.

The DC C1000 is not going to wow you if stylish hardware is your thing. Its black and silver, plastic and metal casing is not particularly pretty and overall the camera is chunky (89 x 60.5 x 32.7mm) and heavy (140g before you insert the two AA cells that power it). However, we do have to say in its favour that it feels solid in the hand and that its controls are nicely located, for right-handed users anyway.

But if you want all those pixels, a range of options that'll let you play about quite a bit and fairly easy to use controls - and if you aren't interested in splashing out a lot of cash - then this camera is going to attract your attention.

Fujifilm FinePix F31fdm Camera Review

The folks over at DPreview were lucky enough to get their hands on the Fujifilm F31fd and liked it for its resolution,sharpness, its image quality, its slow shutter lag, its movie mode which was found decent and its good ISO 800 performance. however the camera did suffer from noisy focus, mild over exposure at times and purple fringing! Also the card writing process was found to be slow and the LCD hard to read in bright light.

The camera has a 6 Megapixel resolution under its hood and includes the 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5-inch LCD. There is the now mandatory Video recorder and the F31fd shoot movies at VGA resolution at 30 frames per second. Lets talk about the Face Detection feature now. Via this feature the camera is able to identify up to 10 faces in a frame and then adjusts the focus accordingly. The Fujifilm F31fd has a maximum ISO of which is practically unheard of in point and shoots! For superior image quality there is the Picture Stabilization and i-Flash system.

FUJIFILM Fine Pix A900

Fuji has introduced a new compact digital camera Fine Pix A900 in its lineage of cameras. The 9 Mega pixel A900 incorporates 4x zoom. Its features also include a Pixel Super CCD Sensor and a Fujinon lens. It comprises of a 2.5-inch LCD display with anti-glare properties. Sony DCR-DVD403 Camcorder Review

At an MSRP of one grand, Sony’s most advanced DVD camcorder to date, the DCR-DVD403 is a killer camcorder providing amazing quality and amazing stills. The DCR-DVD403 might be the first DVD camcorder which competes with MiniDV models in performance that we've seen. Surprisingly, the camcorder produces tremendous video for a cheap price-- compared to last year’s Sony DVD camcorders, that is. If you want convenience and great video quality without the hassle of fiddling with lots of controls, read on.

Video Performance (7.75)
Sony’s most advanced DVD camcorder imager and feature-wise this year is their DCR-DVD403. It is pretty much a brand-new DVD camcorder in that it features a completely new design and imager. The imager is a large 1/3” CCD with 3.31 MP (2.048 MP effective for video and 3.048 effective for still images). With these specs the DCR-DVD403 is by far the most advanced DVD camcorder ever, and it shows. Video on this camcorder neatly surpasses any DVD camcorder we’ve tested thus far, and will, most likely, continue to hold this distinction for the rest of the year. In fact, the DCR-DVD403 holds its own valiantly against some of Panasonic’s 3 CCD camcorders, not really in crispness, but definitely in color. We specifically looked at the DCR-DVD403 against Panasonic's PV-GS400 (Review, Specs, $1099.00), which is priced at about the same point as the DCR-DVD403.

There are definite differences in color between the DCR-DVD403 and some of Panasonic’s 3 CCD camcorders,. For instance, the PV-GS400 shows a much greener spectrum overall while the DCR-DVD403 leans towards the reddish-orange end of the spectrum. The PV-GS400's colors are much more muted, while the DCR-DVD403's colors are extremely saturated, even a bit over-saturated for our tastes. While the colors look vibrant and beautiful, there is so much saturation that they look a bit unnatural, which is why it didn't receive as high of a score as the PV-GS400. The video shot with this camcorder should look very good because the colors are well defined and accurate, but be wary of a generally over-saturated image across all colors.

Quick Review Camcorder : Sony DCR-DVD203

The Sony DCR-DVD203 is this year’s mid-level DVD camcorder offering from Sony. While we loved almost everything about its more advanced sibling, the DCR-DVD403, the wunderkind genes were not passed down the line. With disappointing video performance in both bright and low light, this camcorder must rely on its ease of use to get by.

The best thing going for the DCR-DVD203 may be the 2.7” widescreen LCD. This allows you to actually view a full-size, widescreen picture when shooting in widescreen mode. The next step down, the standard-size screened DCR-DVD103, must add black bars to the top and bottom of the picture to simulate widescreen, just like they do with movies on TV. For your money, though, this might be the better option. You can still have playback in widescreen on your TV, and the CCD probably won’t suffer from the same blue noise problem.

The Sony DCR-DVD203 features a 1.07 MP CCD, the same imager found on last year’s DCR-DVD301 and DCR-DVD201 and this year’s MiniDV camcorder, the DCR-HC42. Our testing found images to be bright, but to the point of over-saturation. The CCD also created a fair amount of blue noise across the color spectrum. If you typically shoot in well lit environments and want a sharper picture, you might take a look at the comparatively priced Hitachi DZ-MV780 and Panasonic VDR-M75. The DCR-DVD203 shoots in two modes: standard 4:3 aspect and widescreen.

The DCR-DVD203 comes equipped to accept a 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound mic, though you’ll have to purchase that on your own. It comes built-in on the DCR-DVD403. This surround sound function may sound cool, but if you’re looking for more audio control, look for a camcorder with a microphone jack. With one of these somewhat mixed down audio can be imported into the camcorder, instead of relying on the camcorder’s built-in jobby. An accessory shoe is fitted to the top of the camcorder for any necessary accessories, but be warned: Sony has begun producing new, smaller-than-standard “Active Interface Shoes.” Previously owned flashes and microphones may not fit.

Sony HDR HC1 MiniDV Digital Camcorder

The HDR-HC1 is uniquely small and light – it also shoots in HD resolution based on HDV 1080i – which is especially unique for a consumer camera.

The camcorder uses Sony’s CMOS imaging sensor technology, meaning faster image processing speeds, richer colors, vivid details, and so on. The camera also uses a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens – a lens of some acclaim that further improves quality and helps pick up the minor nuances that other lens might miss.

The HDR-HC1 also features a 2.7-inch wide hybrid, touch-panel LCD screen – meaning exactly what it sounds like – half touch-screen, half button. In DV mode, users can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios.

Finally, other features include automatic controls, Super SteadyShot image stabilization, a built-in microphone, and even an intelligent pop-up flash.

The camera records unto MiniDV and SD, and is powered by an InfoLithium rechargeable NP-FM50 battery.

The problem, once again, lies in the question of – who really needs a camera like the HDR-HC1? Filmmakers won’t be satisfied – and casual users will have heart palpitations upon seeing the price.

Sony DSR-PDX10 3-CCD DVCAM Camcorder Review

A clear winner here. Audio is very clean, much better than on other DV cameras I have experimented with. The built in stereo omni mics performed surprisingly well, with the supplied on-camera directional doing quite well too, although the gain is not very high and it picks up a lot of handling noise if the high pass filter is not used. Of course the latter is to be expected from such a small camera and the mic mount provided by Sony is not of the suspension type. Connecting a wireless mic receiver to the other XLR input proved to be straightforward and the result was very good sounding. To my ears, as good as my portable pro DAT machine.

The Epson L-300

The L-300 is easy to navigate and produces quality images at a competitive price. It is not likely to set the world on fire but will keep the beginner digital photographer happy.

The PhotoPC 3000Z's design seems influenced by the Olympus C-2000/3000Z series, which isn't a bad thing. It's dimensions are 4.3 x 3.5 x 2.6 inches, and it weighs 12.9 ounces empty.

The silver body is a mix of plastic and metal, and it feels solid and well put-together. The only possible exception is the CompactFlash door, which I could see breaking off one day.

The camera fits well in the hand, with adequate room for both hands, and well-placed controls (for the most part).

Let's tour around the camera now, starting with the front (see the pictures at the top). The f2.0-f2.5 lens is equivalent to a 35-105mm zoom lens on a 35mm camera.

The first thing that strikes you about this compact digital camera is how slim and elegant it feels and how clearly laid out are the controls. Although the black casing would suggest a masculine character, testing in the field clearly showed that both the style and user-friendly appearance especially appealed to women.

But neither sex can fail to be impressed by the 2.5-inch Photo Fine viewer, which Epson claims is the world's highest definition consumer display on the market with 256 pixels per inch. There's no denying the almost surreal clarity and sharpness of the preview images and the high quality of the colour rendition and brightness, which is what you'd expect from a 5-megapixel resolution camera.

There's a choice of 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom and a range of information can be displayed (or hidden) on the LCD. You can see details of battery, resolution, exposure, ISO speed, white balance, photos taken, Macro, etc. There are five scene modes (normal, landscape, portrait, night view and night portrait), three quality settings and five flash settings (including slow synchro).

Epson - P-4000 Multimedia Storage Viewer review

Photography has changed so radically with the introduction of digital cameras that new accessories have had to be developed to enable the serious snapper in the field (both professional and semi-professional) to be able to view and assess the quality of their images before deciding which ones to delete and which to publish.

To meet this need, Epson brought out a portable storage viewer - the P-2000 - that had 40GB of storage space and the added ability to play back videos and MP3 tracks. Although gratefully snapped up at the time, the public inevitably wanted more of everything and Epson has responded with the P-4000, which has doubled the memory capacity to 80GB whilst leaving most of the other features untouched.

The generous Photo Fine 3.8-inch LCD colour display is housed in a sleek, black and grey, aluminium casing that feels weighty and substantial. A soft carry case is supplied for added protection, along with a USB 2.0 lead to connect to your PC, a plastic stand for easy viewing, a Lithium-ion battery, a strap, a power supply and a software CD-ROM.

Hitachi DZ-MV100A DVD Cam

The format the DVD Cam actually records to is 77mm DVD-RAM discs. You don't see those much - heck, you don't often see full-size 120mm DVD-RAM - but they're a standard format, not a special Hitachi invention. And they're proper read-write media, good for many, many thousands of write cycles. You're not going to get anything like that kind of durability from tape.

The discs hold 1.4 gigabytes of data on each side, according to Hitachi. Hitachi are, of course, playing fast and loose with the truth; like all storage device manufacturers, they define a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes. That's not what a gigabyte actually is. It's two to the power of 30 (1,073,741,824) bytes, just as a kilobyte is two to the power of 10 (1024) and a megabyte is two to the power of 20 (1,048,576).

The formatted capacity of the disc that came with my review camera is 1,400,291,328 bytes. That's 1.4 billion bytes, all right, but it's only 1.3Gb.

Anyway, the disc capacity adds up to 30 minutes of fine-quality video (720 by 480 - full NTSC DVD resolution) per disc side, or twice as much in standard quality (half the horizontal resolution - which means it still looks rather better than VHS).

The DVD Cam records in full NTSC 4:3 aspect ratio DVD resolution, 720 by 480 pixels. Hitachi quote its resolution as 704 by 480, but that's not including overscan. There's a 720 by 576 PAL version of the camera coming, to suit the TV standard here in Australia and in Europe, but my review camera was NTSC.

For comparison, DV cameras record exactly the same resolution as DVD for NTSC and PAL, respectively. All sorts of odd resolution numbers are quoted for different digital recording systems, in order to reflect the fact that the image sensors and display devices you use may not actually have as much resolution as the hard, fixed-resolution digital data stream on the storage medium. Just because a digital capture device is delivering some particular resolution doesn't mean that it's doing it sharply. But if all you're doing is counting pixels, 720 by 480 it is, for NTSC DVD and NTSC DV.

DV video's quite different from DVD, because DVD video is fairly heavily MPEG-2 compressed. It has to be, to fit whole movies onto one disc. Yes, a single side of a single layer DVD has a capacity of 4.38 gigabytes (real gigabytes...), and double layer discs store 7.95 gigabytes per side, but there's a lot of video in a movie.

An hour of DVD video is likely to take up roughly two gigabytes - which is about a 4.8 megabit per second data rate.

DV, on the other hand, uses a lighter compression system that gives it a contant 25 megabit per second data rate, just for the raw video stream; it's about 36 megabits per second with audio, error correction information and other overheads. So, although the resolutions are similar, DV's pushing around more than five times as much video data. You couldn't fit 20 minutes of DV onto a single side, single layer DVD.

Fuji includes a tiny (in more ways than one) 16MB xD card with the camera, which holds a grand total of three photos taken at the highest resolution. So plan on buying a memory card instantly. The S7000 can use xD cards, or the much higher capacity CompactFlash cards, including the Microdrive. A few weird notes about CompactFlash support on this camera. First, Fuji only officially supports the use of Microdrives in the CF slot, though regular cards will work as well. Secondly, although I'm having a hard time confirming this, I've heard that the S7000 is not FAT32 compatible, meaning that it can only see 2GB of data on a memory card.

Batteries are something else that you'll need to buy right away. Fuji includes four non-rechargeable alkaline batteries along with the camera, which will quickly find their way into the trash (or should I say, recycling bin). Buy yourself two or more sets of NiMH batteries (2000 mAh or greater) and a fast charger, and you'll be set.

Fuji estimates that you can take about 340 pictures using LCD (50% flash use) with a set of 2100 mAh batteries -- not too shabby. Using the Microdrive knocks about 10% from those numbers. (I must say that I'm not a fan of Microdrives anymore; for one, they increase power consumption. Two, they seem unreliable: both of mine failed.)

Olympus E-330 Digital SLR Camera

It is also versatile, offering a wider field of view than most prosumer digicams at 24mm and a useful telephoto focal length of 120mm; this lens fits what most dSLR users describe as their "walk-around" lens. Its variable aperture is a relatively fast f/2.8 at its 24mm wide angle extreme, but slows to f/4.8 at its 120mm telephoto focal length. The lens produces very sharp results throughout its zoom and aperture ranges, but with a slight amount of edge softness at wide angle with small aperture settings, and at moderate to telephoto focal lengths with moderate to large aperture settings. On paper it also offers a very compelling feature set at a competitive price, including some (RAW capture, flash hot shoe) that are pretty much unique in this class of camera. But the poor low light performance (focusing and high ISO noise), the softness, the excessive noise reduction and sharpening and the fact that this is the first camera I've tested in years that actually crashed on me more than once (requiring the removal of the battery to reset it) means I can't unreservedly recommend it. And the idea (exposed in Kodak's publicity material) that this is a serious alternative to a DSLR is, frankly, to be taken with a hefty pinch of salt.'
